Beyond The Horizon
Hello my fellow Tigers,
My name is Rolando J. Bermudez and I graduated in 2007. I'm writing this memoir to let you know of the great experiences I had in high school. I was an ESL student in 9th grade and I had some terrific teachers. I have to admit SFHS faculty taught me lessons that have guided me to where I am today. I'm currently a senior at UC Berkeley with a full scholarship. My major is civil engineering with an emphasis in structural, project management, and geotech. This summer (2010) I'm actually writing this memoir from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where I'm doing research on material science, specially masonry and concrete for buildings and bridges all over the world. I've done research in Berkeley as well in aerospace engineering. Something that might motivate you, research pays good. REAL GOOD, and it's fun!
This year I'm applying to graduate schools for masters program in engineering or MBA at Cal Tech, MIT, Berkeley and some UC's. However, this might sound really colorful but I have to admit that I did not do all of this on my own. Sometimes you need the right resources to be successful. Even if it seems impossible to succeed in high school, you can do it if you put your mind to it. I did it and for the same reason you will as well. I'm a first generation student, I was born in Mexico and I came at the age of 12 without knowing any English. Don't let anybody tell you you're not capable of succeeding because you're not in a "top High School". This doesn't only goes to the ESL students but to everyone in SFHS. Move up in academia and in your life as a human being. Become a model for the younger students. Be a legacy, be authentic, but most of all, be successful. Be the person you wanted to be when you were a child. Be an athlete in academia that follows his/her dreams.
